Print Remotely With Remote Desktop

When accessing another computer using Windows Remote Desktop Connection, you are in control of the remote system's files and functions, including copying, saving and transferring files as well as deleting files. You also are able to print documents from the remote computer onto your printer. The document enters the remote computer's print control program, also known as a spooler, and is then sent to your printer. This feature is handy when you need a hard copy of a document or other file.

Instructions

1. Click "Start," "All Programs," "Accessories" and "Remote Desktop Connection" if using Windows Vista or Windows 7. Click "Start," "All Programs," "Accessories," "Communications" and "Remote Desktop Connection" if using Windows XP. The Remote Desktop Connection dialog box will open.
2. Click "Options" to expand the dialog box's configuration options.
3. Click on the "Local Resources" tab. Click on the check box next to "Printers" under the heading "Local devices and resources."
4. Click on the "General" tab. Enter the Internet Protocol (IP) address or computer name of the remote computer you want to access in the "Computer:" box. Click "Connect" to connect to the remote computer.
5. Open the application on the remote computer containing the document you want to print. Click "File," then "Open" to navigate and open the document.
6. Click "File," then "Print." Confirm that your printer is highlighted in the "Print" dialog box. Click "OK" to print the document to your printer.
